1. What does it mean that the USA is an indirect democracy.?

It means that people rule though representatives they elect

2. Who has the right to vote?

Any citizen who is at least 18 years old can vote.

3. When was the constitution written?

The United States Constitution was written in 1787

4. What is remarkable about it?

The remarkable thing about it is that it was written more than 200 years ago and the United States has experiences enormous growth and change. Yet the Constitution works as well today as when it was written. One reason is that the Constitution can be amended and changed. Another reason is that the Constitution is flexible which means that its basic principals can be applied and interpreted differently at different times.

5. What does it mean that the USA has a federalist system?

It means that there are individual states, each with its own government and there is a federal, or national government. The constitution gives certain powers to the federal government and other powers to the state governments, and yet other powers to both.

6. What are 3 branches of power?

Within the national government, power is divided among 3 branches: the legislative, executive and judicial branches.

7. What do they consist of?

The legislative branch consist of Congress, which has two parts: the house of representatives and Senate. There are 100 senators and 435 representatives

The executive branch’s head is the President . In addition to the President, the Vice-President, and their staffs, the executive branch consists of departments and agencies.

The Judicial branch consist of supreme court (there are 9 members who are appointed for life) and federal courts.

8. What are their functions?

The legislative branch’s main function is to make laws
The Executive branch’s function is to put the laws into practice

The judicial branch’s function is to interpret the laws and makes sure that new laws are in keeping with the Constitution.

9. The system of checks and balances what is it?

It is meant to prevent any branch from having too much power. Each branch has certain controls over the other branches.

10. What does it mean that the United States has a two-party system?

It means that the USA has two main political parties, the Democratic and Republican parties. Many other smaller parties play little if any role. President doesn’t have to be from the party that has a majority in Congress.

11. Who are those two parties supported by?

The republicans tend to be more conservative and to have more support among the upper classes while the Democrats tend to be more liberal and to have more support among the working classes and the poor.

12. What does it mean that another parties don’t count?

They have no say in running the country.
